A diode bridge is an arrangement of four diodes in a bridge circuit configuration that provides the same polarity of output for either polarity of input. When used in its most common application, for conversion of an alternating-current input into a direct-current output, it is known as a bridge rectifier.

FRD stands for fast recovery diodes. They offer high-speed support and generally have a trr of approximately 50 to 100 ns. With a VF of approximately 1.5 V, it is rather large when compared to general rectifying diodes. Another generic term for the FRD type would be a “High-speed diode.”

The Schottky diode, also known as Schottky barrier diode or hot-carrier diode, is a semiconductor diode formed by the junction of a semiconductor with a metal. It has a low forward voltage drop and a very fast switching action.

Tunnel diode can be used as a switch, amplifier, and oscillator. Since it shows a fast response, it is used as high frequency component. Tunnel diode acts as logic memory storage device. They are used in oscillator circuits, and in FM receivers.

A “fast” rectifier typically recovers ten times faster than a standard rectifier, and an “ultrafast” designation is usually applied to rectifiers designed to beat the standard rectifier recovery by being more than fifty times faster.

Zener diodes are used for voltage regulation, as reference elements, surge suppressors, and in switching applications and clipper circuits. The load voltage equals breakdown voltage VZ of the diode. The series resistor limits the current through the diode and drops the excess voltage when the diode is conducting.
